Lucas Hoffert Memorial Bursary – Sports Trust Fund
Lucas began wrestling at six years old with the Saskatoon Wrestling Club’s “Pups” program. In 2003, he moved to Regina and joined what later became the Cattown Wrestling Club, where he was the youngest in the room. From those early days, he grew into an exceptional wrestler and a remarkable person. He was always so grateful for the many impactful coaches he had throughout his wrestling career, including his dad Gary, who coached him for several of his early years.
He proudly represented Saskatchewan at the Western Canada and Canada games, attaining individual gold and silver, respectively. He was a 6-time Canadian national medalist, both in Freestyle and Greco-Roman and went on to represent Canada at the Cadet World Championships in Azerbaijan. He won silver at the Junior Pan American Championships in Greco-Roman wrestling, was a 2-time Canada West gold medalist, and 3-time silver medalist for the University of Regina. He captained the U of R wrestling team from 2014–2018 and finished his five-year university wrestling career as a USPORTS silver medalist.
Lucas’ commitment to excellence extended well beyond the mat. He earned Academic All-Canadian honours three times and completed his science program earning an Academic Silver Scholarship for his GPA, as well as the American Chemical Society Undergraduate Award for Analytical Chemistry. In his and the program’s final season, he was also honoured with the University of Regina President’s Award for exceptional academic, athletic, and leadership achievement.
Lucas went on to complete medical school at the University of Saskatchewan, residency training in Kamloops and worked as a family physician in various communities across Alberta and British Columbia. In his work, he continued his commitment to excellence and service to others.
Yet, for those who shared a training space with Lucas, his accomplishments were only part of what made him special. He was fiercely competitive on the mat, but off it, you would never have known the exceptional talent and competitor he was. He was kind, humble, happy, and almost always smiling. He led by example and made those around him better.
Lucas was the embodiment of the character Sask Wrestling aspires to develop in our athletes. There is no better role model for our whole community. We are incredibly proud to have had Lucas represent Saskatchewan. His impact on our wrestling community will not be forgotten, and he will be deeply missed.
In honour of Lucas and his lifelong commitment to wrestling, his family has established a bursary in collaboration with Sask Wrestling and Sask Sport to support young wrestlers in pursuing their goals. Lucas was not only an athlete, but he went on to coach high school wrestling in Regina, and he cared immensely about growing the sport and supporting young athletes.
